Question:
Is it permissible to do fireworks in a masjid or on its property such as the parking lot, in an ʿEīd carnival or celebration?
Answer:
In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.
In general, fireworks, according to Islam is considered makrūh (religiously disliked) due to wastage of money and also the possibility of causing harm or damage to people or property.
If the fireworks are done in imitation of other religions and or religious celebrations such as Diwālī, then it is impermissible (ḥarām) according to Islamic guidelines.
To have fireworks in the compound or property of the masjid is forbidden (ḥarām) as it violates the sanctity, honour and respect of the masjid. If such fireworks are conducted in a nearby property or other open field etc. with no extravagance and intent of imitation, the fireworks would be allowed with some karāhah (dislikeness).
“Eat, drink, spend, and dress without extravagance or arrogance.”(Bukhārī)
“If one observes the sanctity of Allāh’s symbols, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts” (Qurʿān 22:32)
“The one who imitates a nation is amongst them” (Abū Dāwūd)
