Answered by Shaykh Yūsuf Badāt

Question:

Is it permissible in Islam for a sunni girl to marry a shi’ā who only believes in Allāh and his Messenger Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him).

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

Those wishing to adhere to Qur’ānic principles and prophetic teachings know that marriage is only permitted to certain individuals. As a general principle, the Qur’ān dictates that a Muslim woman can only marry a Muslim man.

“And do not give (your women) in marriage to polytheist men, unless they come to believe” (Qur’ān 2:221)

Regardless of what one labels themselves to be, if one sincerely believes in all the major tenants of Islam as outlined in the Qur’an and authentic Ḥadīth, they are considered a genuine Muslim.

Some of these tenants are listed below:

  • Belief in One God (Allāh), without any partners
  • Belief that Muḥammad (peace be upon him) is the final Messenger
  • Belief in the angels
  • Belief in all the genuine revealed books and scriptures
  • Belief in all the Messengers and prophets of God
  • Belief in life after death
  • Belief in the Day of Judgement
  • Belief in destiny decreed by Allāh
  • Belief in the existence of Paradise & Hellfire
  • Belief in the Ascension (Me’rāj) of the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him)
  • Belief in the existence of the Ḥawdh (pool)
  • Belief in the Shafā’ah (intercession by the chosen ones)
  • Belief in the existence of the Law (tablet) and the Qalam (pen)
  • Belief in the existence of the ‘Arsh (throne)
  • Belief in all the Companions of the Prophet and respecting all of them.
  • Belief in the five pillars
  • Belief in the Signs of the Day of Judgement

And Allāh Knows Best
