Question:
Does a woman who suffers from leucorrhoea have to take ghusl (Islamic bath) before every prayer? Does leucorrhoea discharge invalidate a woman’s fast?
Answer:
In the Name of Allāh, Most Merciful, Most Kind
Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.
Leucorrhoea is a thick, whitish or yellowish vaginal discharge.
This discharge nullifies the wuḍū (ritual ablution), hence renewal of wuḍū is required before commencing ritual prayer. If the discharge soiled garments, then the soiled areas of the garments must be cleaned before using them for prayer.
If the discharge is excessively constant and the vagina is usually wet with the discharge, then the woman experiencing this will only make one wuḍū for the duration of one prayer time.
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) instructed Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh (may Allāh be pleased with her) to wash the discharge and pray. Such a woman who had excessive discharge was also instructed to make wuḍū for every prayer, until the time for the next prayer came. (See: Bukhārī, Fatḥ Al-Bārī, Al-Ṭabaqāt Al-Kubrā)
This discharge will not nullify the fast since there is nothing entering the stomach cavity nor is there any sexual activity resulting in ejaculation.
Ibn Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) and ʿIkramah (may Allāh be pleased with him) have stated, “The fast is invalidated by what enters the internal stomach cavity.” (Bukhārī)
“Have sexual relations with the spouses … and eat and drink until the white thread [light] of dawn appears [to commence the fasting].” (Qurʿān 2:187)
