Wearing Iḥrām to Access the Maṭāf Area

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Badat

Question:

Can one wear irām clothing so they can go to maṭāf area (close to the ka’abah) to do awāf? Would this be considered lying?

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for contacting Mathabah Institute.

There is nothing islamicaly questionable for men doing awāf while in irām sheets. There is no lying or cheating involved if men are putting on irām to access the main maāf area near the ka’abah, since only men with irām garments are currently allowed on the main floor of the aram.

There is no such announcement or sign by the administrators of the aram that prohibit the main maāf area for non-‘umrah pilgrims. Hence, no cheating and or lying is involved. The administrators are simply minimizing the people by restricting the maāf area for crowd control.

It is also worthy to note that awāf is easily possible on the second, third and fourth floors with no restrictions.

“And who is more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allāh from being mentioned in His mosques?” – (Qurʾān 4:6)

“And [recall] when We made the House (the ka’abah) a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. Make, [O believers], the station of Abraham a place of prayer. We instructed Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House (the ka’abah) for those who perform ṭawāf, those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].” – (Qur’ān: 2:125)
