Question:
Can I celebrate my walīmah feast (marriage) one day before Ᾱshūrah day (10th Muḥarram)?
Answer:
Thank you for your question. Congratulations to you on your wedding and proposed walīmah. May Allāh bless you with a wonderful wedding, peace, joy, happiness and steadfastness on His dīn.
Yes you may celebrate and have your walīmah feast on the 9th of Muḥarram or any other day in Muḥarram for that matter. There is no restriction in the Qur’ān, sunnah (prophetic teachings) or Islamic jurisprudence for having a walīmah in the blessed month of Muḥarram.
There is no doubt that there have been some devastating historical events that occurred in the month of Muḥarram, however the religion of Islam does not demand us to remorse or mourn by avoiding marriages or celebrations in this or any other month. Muḥarram is a month of blessings, hence if anything, one should be going ahead with their marriage during this blessed season.
In fact, scholarly Islamic historians have recorded that the marriage of ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) to the Prophet’s daughter, Fāṭimah (may Allāh be pleased with her) took place in the month of Muḥarram in the 3rd year after migration to Madīnah.
