Question:
My friend and her husband are going for Ḥajj this year. My friend is asking her husband to do Ḥajj Badal for her dad as this is his husband’s second Ḥajj. They have two questions regarding Ḥajj Badal:
- Her dad did not make any waṣīyyah (bequest) regarding Ḥajj and they do not even know if the Ḥajj was even farḍ (obligated) on him or not. Is it fine to do Ḥajj Badal for him?
- If her husband makes the intention of Ḥajj Badal for his wife’s dad, will all the rewards go to the person for whom he will do Ḥajj Badal or will he himself also get rewards and blessings?
Answer:

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for contacting Mathābah Institute.
Ḥajj Badal cannot take place on behalf of the deceased in the described situation. One of the conditions for the validity of Ḥajj Badal to be acceptable is the authorization and delegation by the one on whose behalf the Ḥajj Badal is being performed. However, the rewards can be intended for the deceased. The pilgrim will make du’ā to Allāh that the rewards of the Ḥajj be passed on to the deceased as well. In this manner, the pilgrim as well as the one intended will attain blessings and rewards from the Almighty. – (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār, Vol 2, Page 600, Dār Al-Fikr[1])
