Question:

If I recommend someone to open an online bank account, the bank will give me £40 as a reward. Is it permissible to accept this money?

Answer:

It is permissible to accept the £40 reward in the described situation. This is considered a gift (hadiyah/ hibah), an incentive to bring new clients to the business. The reward is neither interest nor a result of an islamicaly forbidden transaction, therefore it is permissible. – (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār, Vol 5, Page 677, Dār Al-Fikr, Al-Bināyah, Vol 10, Page 160, Dār Al-Kutub Al-‘Ilmiyyah)

وَشَرَائِطُ صِحَّتِهَا فِي الْمَوْهُوبِ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَقْبُوضًا غَيْرَ مَشَاعٍ مُمَيَّزًا غَيْرَ مَشْغُولٍ كَمَا سَيَتَّضِحُ وَرُكْنُهَا هُوَ الْإِيجَابُ وَالْقَبُولُ – كتاب الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين رد المحتار ج٥/ ص ٦٨٨

وتصح أي الهبة بالإيجاب كقوله وهبت ونحوه هذا بمجرده في حق الواهب والقبول كقوله قبلت والقبض بالجر أي وبالقبض فلا يتم في حق الموهوب له إلا بالقبول والقبض – كتاب البناية شرح الهداية ج١٠ / ص١٦٠
