Question:
My work requires travelling and company functions with non-Muslims who drink. Sometimes, circumstances do not allow me and other Muslim colleagues to sit on a separate table. Also, as a senior staff member, I have to pay the banquet bills (which include alcohol) using the company credit card. I cringe at it, but hope for Allāh’s mercy. Is this acceptable?
Answer:
In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Kind.
Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.
May God bless you for your concern regarding the religion.
Due to the below mentioned prophetic narration, it is impermissible to sit on the same table with those who are consuming wine there:
“Whoever believes in God and the final day, let them not sit at a table where wine is being served.” (Tirmidhī)
I would suggest you respectfully talk to the authority at your company and explain your situation with reasons. Many non Muslims would be respectful to religiously sensitive issues.
In the situation where it seems to be totally impossible, you should feel remorse for the sin, make the interaction as brief as possible, and ask for forgiveness from God after the occurrence.
I also suggest that you immediately look for another job that would not have any Islamicaly impermissible elements. Once you find that job, you can leave this position and be at ease in your heart of having an absolutely ḥalāl income.
May the Almighty bless you with success.
And Allāh Knows Best.
