The New Moon (A Poem About Ramadan)

By Sarosh Mohna Zaidi

A new wind blows the rise of a new moon

A new hope stirring in the heart too soon

And as the crescent appears in front of the eyes

The dark, sinful heart turns away and dies

The month of virtues comes upon us all

As the angels to men make their call

As the heart now firmly believes it too

The month of fasting has come anew

The heart at first denies such a worship

No motivation in mind, nothing at his lip

But then Allah (SWA) shows its rewards true

By speaking to whoever believes him through

“Verily every deed done by the man alive

Is for him alone to help him survive

Be it the survival of the life after birth

Or be it the survival of life after earth”

“But one deed he does is there only for Me

For its effect no other man could ever see

No man could tell if this deed is being done

No light could reveal, be it the light of Sun”

“This deed is fasting which the hearts require

The man in this state drops his own desire

He refrains from food because of My command

He does not drink, even with water in his hand”

Then Prophet (SAW) points out to the fasting one

“There are two moments for the deed being done

These pleasurable moments cannot be ignored

One is breaking fast and other is meeting The Lord”

“And to refrain from eating it creates a scent

That’s disliked by others for its low decent

But that scent in your mouth that comes till dusk

Is to Allah more dear than the scent of musk”

The believer now wonders for the rewards

Assuring of where he is moving towards

He sees the benefits but asks it still

For he wishes for more benefits to his will

To that Allah replies with words so true

To this not even the world can compare to

For a reward as great as this can only be

A reward every believer wishes to see

Allah says “The reward given for fasting.

Is reward that is beautiful and everlasting.

It’s a reward oft giving and always true.

Oh you who fast, I am its reward for you”

With a reward so great no one can resist

Thus the believer continues on to persist

And he keeps looking in search tonight

To see in the dark sky the crescent of white

And when the believer now sees up high

There he sees the crescent in the sky

Immediately he falls gracefully in prostrate

Ramadhan is here holding rewards so great

A new wind blows the rise of a new moon

A new hope stirring in the heart too soon

And as the crescent appears in front of the eyes

The dark, sinful heart turns away and dies
