When is it Prohibited for a Couple to Have Intercourse?

Question:

When is it prohibited for a husband and wife to have sexual intercourse?

Answer:

A husband and wife are permitted to enjoy marital intercourse with mutual consent at any time. The only islamicaly prohibited occasions for intercourse are the following:

  • When the wife is experiencing menses and or post-natal bleeding. (See: Qurʿān 2:222)
  • When either partner is fasting during daylight hours. (See: Qurʿān 2:187)
  • When either partner is in the state of iḥrām [for pilgrimage]. (See: Qurʿān 2:197)
