Question:
I recite the following ‘qunūt du‘ā’ in the third raka’ah of the witr ṣalāh.
Someone recently confronted me stating that there is no basis or evidence for this ‘qunūt. Can you kindly clarify?

To answer your concern, kindly note that the ‘qunūt supplication’ you have described is valid and found in numerous reliable ḥadīths and reports. Here below I point out some reports with relevant references.
This qunūt was taught to the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) by the angel Jibrīl. (See Abū Dāwūd & Mudawwanāt Al Kubrā)
- This qunūt was recited by the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) in witr. (See Bayhaqī)
- This qunūt was recited by ‘Omar Ibn Al Khaṭṭāb (may Allāh be pleased with him). (See Ṭaḥāwī, Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah, Sunan Al Bayhaqī and Kanz Al ‘Ommāl)
- ‘Alī Ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) would recite this qunūt. (See Al Mudawwanah & I’elā Al Sunan)
- Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) states, this qunūt was recited by Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) and also by Abū Mūsā (may Allāh be pleased with him). (See Al Itqān)
It should be noted that reciting the above qunūt in witr prayer, is considered sunnah according to the Ḥanafī school, however other reported wordings of the qunūt prayer may also be recited or preferably attached to this qunūt. (See Al Dur, Rad Al Muhtār & I’elā Al Sunan)
